Francois Nel
Ultimate Coaching
Coaches can play a big part of shaping an athlete’s life, both physically and mentally. Francois Nel agrees and knows his job as a coach is a serious responsibility and not just fun and games.
“I believe that the athlete you are coaching is more than just flesh and bones,” Francois told Source 4 Speed. “I have an enormous responsibility in developing the character of the athlete because of the trust being given to me. Sport is a vehicle to help develop a human being that will make a difference for good where ever he or she goes.
Francois is part of Ultimate Coaching in Bellville and Stellenbosch, South Africa close to Cape Town. Providing coaching services to schools and clubs in South Africa, Ultimate Coaching puts on clinics as well as develops and implements systems for netball at schools. They focus on movement skill development and have recently introduced coaching to individual athletes of different sporting disciplines. He also coaches at the University of Stellenbosch where he is responsible for the Junior Maties netball team. In addition, he coaches the Boland under 19 provincial team which participated at the South African National Championships.
His education and certifications include Cricket Level 2, Netball Level 1, and IYCA YFS Level 2.
No stranger to success, Francois has a list of accomplishments to show for his 15 years in the profession. He has been named best coach twice in his two years at the Bellville Junior Cricket Club; coached Oxford University Netball Club’s first team also known as the Blues, and his team won the intervarsity with Cambridge University. The Blues were also undefeated during his tenure and won the BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) 1st league.
Alsan Hurter, the mother of a young athlete coached by Francois echoes his philosophy and is grateful for such a dedicated coach. “Mr. Nel’s dedication as a coach is evident through teaching his team players not only the skills of netball, but also the skills of life, like dedication, hard work, loyalty, team spirit and the handling of pressure and disappointment - skills they will need for the rest of their lives. Francios Nel’s passion and coaching skills are an asset for the sporting discipline netball.”
Francois is also recognized by his peers as a leader and points to a compliment from a veteran PE teacher of 30 years as one of his most cherished memories in the profession. After observing Francois work with a group for about 7 months, the teacher told Francois he had changed her mind about coaching young athletes. “She said that I have proved that you could change cart horses into racing horses,” he reported.
Francois enjoys being a Speed Insider and says he has learned a lot from Lee. “Lee likes to call it the different tools for your tool box. I can’t wait for my Speed Insiders parcel every month. I keep on having to enlarge my tool box.”
