I often hear people’s definitions of the differences between motivation and inspiration. I am not sure there really is a big difference, but if there is I see it as this:
Inspiration is something that has happened to you. Motivation is something that happened. I know these definitions can be turned to apply the other way as well, but for me, motivation is something that I need and inspiration is something I attain.
When I don’t really feel like doing my work I have to find the motivation to push through the process of completing my work. When I am done, I am inspired by what I have accomplished.
Like I said, this could easily be turned around and motivation is the finished product and inspiration is the igniter of action.
For me though, I want inspiration to be the byproduct of my motivation. I want to be inspired to always feel good when I exercise, eat well, share time with my kids, and do good work on projects. I have to find the motivation through my knowledge of what will happen if I do or do not accomplish my task. That motivation comes in many ways, but the fact that I will be inspired to continue, sometimes, is motivation enough.
I would love to hear what motivation and inspiration mean to you. How do you value these two sources of personal energy?
Yours in Speed,
Lee
