At the Michael Jordan Flight School in Las Vegas last summer I had several opportunities to hear Michael speak and give his expert advice. One particular thing that I vividly remember him saying was how important his coaches were in his life. Without hesitation, he said having a coach made him who he is today.
Michael not only spoke about his athletic and sports coaches, but he spoke about his business coaches. He has developed such an empire, but none of it would have happened had he not had mentors along the way (and continues to). He went on to say, “coaches see things in you that you can’t see. They are distant enough from your personal feelings to be able to make unbiased judgments and decisions for you”. Of all the things Michael talked about that week the topic of having a coach made the most impact on me.
In the past, I have written a lot about how my father’s experiences as coach, teacher and athlete impacted me greatly. When I was a young and starting out in athletics, my father was retired from coaching. However, he was still an athletic director and PE teacher and coached me on how to be better.
As a young person, you start to develop this “I know it all” attitude. Even though I felt like I had it figured out by the age of 14, I still new if I needed help I could count on my dad or my coach. We don’t always need someone breathing down our necks all the time. We simply need someone to call on when we do need some coaching. However, I would have to say there are times when we do need that person breathing down our necks.
The bottom line is, if you are going to succeed at anything you have to have coaching or mentoring. I always tell my daughters they are very fortunate to have a father who has a lot of resources and can help them in many ways through their athletic life as well and their personal life. What I want them to learn at a young age is they will always need a coach in life no matter what stage they are at.
It wasn’t long ago, I was working with a young athlete. He was progressing along as well as someone his age should have, but because he wasn’t progressing as fast as his mother thought he should have she didn’t have him continue with me and decide he would continue the training on his own. The boy was only 11 years old and had only worked with me for 8 weeks. The fact he stopped working with me wasn’t my big issue. It was the fact the mother decided he no longer needed mentoring or coaching as his age. This attitude is what causes people not to reach their true potential.
I can’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t called on the help of a mentor to guide me in coaching, training, business, parenting or personal life. A coach can be anyone you trust or value, however if you don’t take the leap to surround yourself with a coach or group of people that can help you to achieve your goals, then you are selling yourself short and always will.
