There will always be a debate on the proper training of young athletes, especially when we are referring to the 10-13 age groups. I am a firm believer that it is perfectly fine to add LIGHT resistance to younger athletes when they are speed training. I believe this for a couple reasons. The first reason is it is fun, cool, and they are training like the big boys and girls. Secondly, at their young age of discovering body awareness, adding a little resistance makes them reactively and neuromuscularly become more aware of their movement.
Let me first state, I am not an advocate for training young kids like older more experienced athletes. Young kids should play, learn to move freely, and discover. However, just like I would take a 9 year old and work on his or her foul shooting technique, or teach them the proper way to throw a ball, I am going to take small bits of time and try to make specific improvements where I can. Adding light resistance to make them more kinesthetic aware is an example of this. Here a sample of how I use light resistance:
1. I take a super light band or tubing and attach it around the athletes waste. Then I will have the athlete perform 3-5 reps of 5-10 yard acceleration. They might only perform 1-2 sets but just enough to create awareness and have some fun.
2. Secondly, I have the youngster perform some lateral movements. This is when great learning takes place. I like to have them perform a shuffle and crossover for 5-6 yards. What I like about this is the light feedback they will immediately receive as they lower and push harder with the appropriate leg.
3. Finally, introduce the backpedal to them with light resistance…it is like gold. They really gain an awareness of their body in space and also learn how to apply more force in with their legs in a pattern they don’t normally do.
If you are not in favor of using LIGHT resistance with younger kids- no problem. You can wait until you are more comfortable. But, if you are up for it, it is a great learning tool for their neuromuscular system and most importantly- THEY WILL HAVE FUN!

Hi Mike,
Glad to hear you are in the trenches with PE. I was a PE teacher for many years. I am glad you are doing things with the kids. My only concern is doing anything with kids on machines. You don’t want to mess with the natural relationship of stability and mobility. These two components work off each other and in a developing child they need to use the relationship of mobility and stability to develop proper motor patterns and programs. Machine training that is fixed and only one dimensional works against the natural movement of kids. Keep the kids with lots of free movement, climbing, pulling, pushing, lunging, squatting, rolling… they will develop in front of your eyes if you stick to this approach. Keep up the good work with kids Mike!

Lee,
You know I have been experimenting with 10-13 year olds using red and black resistance bands and I am fully convinced that their foot work is amazingly better in weeks.
However you must keep the band tension low and keep the movements looking great.
We do alot of simple 1 and 2 step drills that the kids really enjoy doing. By keeping amplitude low the deceleration speed is less and they learn how to get their feet in the proper position as they return back to the starting position.
Also because of the unlimited force vectors, kids like doing simple staggered stance pushing and pulling which again helps teach them effective lower torso stabilization.
For fun… Crawling is where they love to go.
Thanks for the post.

Hey David,
I have used bands with young kids since the early 90’s and have had great results. The key, as you mentioned, is to keep the resistance light so they do not change or compensate the skill pattern. Plus, they love it. Too me, it is not different than having them do drills with a med ball- you can either do it the correct way or the incorrect way. Bands can easily work for the youngsters.

Lee,
Great idea. Where can I get some lighter bands appropriate for speed training for girls in the 10-13 age range.
Thanks,
Greg
